It's poll season folks! USA Today has published the first coaches poll of the season. Of course, we see the usual suspects at the top with Alabama, Clemson, and Oklahoma, but who are some surprise teams on this list? Who has the coaches underrated and overrated heading into this new season of college football. Well, look no further because I will have it laid out perfectly for you.
The two things that I liked the most when this list came out were the rankings of Cincinnati (10) and Iowa State (8). After their performances last season and the talent returning for both rosters, I am glad that they are getting the recognition that they deserve and am excited to watch them perform this season.
Overrated
You can't have an overrated list without the Texas Longhorns. The Longhorns come in at #19 in the coaches poll and frankly, they should not be ranked at all. They have a new head coach and have a new quarterback coming in. They went 7-3 and 8-5 the past two seasons and that was with Sam Ehlinger at quarterback. He was not exactly Cam Newton at Auburn but he will still be tough to replace. Watch out for their week 1 game against Louisiana-Lafayette too. Remember, they went into Iowa State and beat them in week 1 last season.
Another team that is overrated is LSU. I would've likely had this opinion had Myles Brennan not had an injury a week ago, but there is no way in hell that they are the 13th best team in the country. Some teams that I would take over them that are ranked lower include Wisconsin, Penn State, Iowa, and Washington. Absolutely a reputation ranking for Coach O and company.
Underrated
The first team that popped into my mind as an underrated team is Penn State. I think that this is a very talented team (outside of their quarterback) and they can do a lot to mask the terrible season from a year ago. They get Wisconsin week 1 and just wait until week 3 when they blow out Auburn in Happy Valley. That will put the nation on notice. Will they win the Big 10? Hell no. That is Ohio State's conference. Do I think they are better than 21? Yes, I do.
The other team that I believe is underrated is the Washington Huskies. Seeing Oregon and USC at 12 and 14 respectively while Washington is at #21 is criminal. Washington is every bit as good as those two programs and can make a serious claim at not only the PAC 12 title but a spot in the CFP this season. Be good on the offensive line and have a great defense and you can beat anybody.
