Jack Elliott post New York Red Bulls Press Conference

Updated: Jul 26, 2021

Philadelphia Union defender Jack Elliott spoke to the press following the 1-0 win over rivals New York Red Bulls.

It was the Union's first home clean sheet in the league this year, and Elliott believed it was down to the hard work of every player on the field.

Elliott said: "We defended well. We didn't let them have shots inside the box. It's a credit to everyone and our defending and finishing off our difficult stretch with a lot of energy. It's a credit to everyone and the effort we've put in the last two weeks."

"We all played together to get that clean sheet, and everyone worked hard from the strikers back. With 'Dre [Blake] making the saves he needed to, and I think everyone put in everything that they had."

Cory Burke scored the winning goal in the ninth minute, and it was the Union's first, first-half goal this season.

Despite scoring so early, Elliott admitted that it did nothing to change how the Union approached the game.

He said: "I don't think it changes too much for us. We're still going to play our game once we score. I think our game works best when the other team has to come out and try and break us down. Then we can catch them on counter-attacks."

Saturday's game was the end of Jose Martinez's suspension. During his absence, Leon Flach has been deployed in front of the Union back four.

Elliott was full of praise for the German, who has played a vital role in the Union's solid defensive displays in recent weeks.

Elliott said: "Everyone can see that he's a very good player in all aspects of the game. Especially, snuffing out counter-attacks and playing in front of us as a back four. He can get around the pitch, defend one-on-one in the middle of the pitch, which is a difficult thing to do. He's been important for us over the past few games."
