Iona Pulls Away Late to Defeat Delaware 89–66

ree

Iona used a dominant second half to defeat Delaware 89–66 on Monday night at the Bob Carpenter Center in Newark.

The first half was a defensive grind, with both teams forcing turnovers but struggling to convert them into points. Iona’s leading scorer, CJ Anthony, was quiet early, but the Gaels shifted their offense through him late in the half to take a six-point lead into the break. Lamin Sabally anchored Iona on both ends, leading the team in scoring, rebounds, and assists at halftime.

Delaware stayed competitive behind strong first-half contributions from Macon Emory and Christian Bliss, while Daniel Houser controlled the glass and consistently outworked Iona’s frontcourt.

The momentum shifted quickly after halftime. Delaware’s early intensity faded, and Iona opened the second half on a 7–0 run, capitalizing on multiple defensive lapses to build a double-digit lead. The Gaels then took full control by breaking down Delaware’s zone and repeatedly generating clean looks.

Anthony led the surge, scoring 19 of his 26 points in the second half. His ball movement and initiation created a steady flow of baskets for the Gaels. Iona also flipped the script on points off turnovers, outscoring Delaware 22–6 in that category after halftime despite committing two more turnovers overall.

Delaware returns to action Saturday at Delaware State. Iona hosts Quinnipiac on Friday.
