Philadelphia Union announced the signing of free-agent defender Alvas Powell on Thursday afternoon.

The 26-year-old Jamaican international has signed a one-year minimum senior contract and has vast experience in the MLS, having played over 100 games for Portland Timbers.

After leaving the Timbers, he has played for FC Cincinnati, Inter Miami and most recently, Al-Hilal Club. He left the Sudanese club in March and had been searching for a club since. Powell has been deployed as a right-back throughout his career and will provide experience behind Olivier Mbaizo.

Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner was delighted to get the deal over the line and was full of praise for the new defender who has already trained with his new teammates.

“We are excited to add Alvas to our defensive unit. He brings almost eight years of MLS experience to the club as well as the mentality and work ethic it takes to win a cup.”

“He has the physicality required to contribute to all phases of play and adds important depth to our backline.”
