Philadelphia Union left back Kai Wagner was named to the MLS All-Star Team roster on Wednesday afternoon for the first time in his career.
The German defender joined the club from Wurzburger Kickers in 2019 and has been a first-team regular with Philadelphia since signing. Into his third season, he has played 61 times, scoring twice. He grabbed his second Union goal from a free-kick against the Chicago Fire on Sunday night. That earned him a spot in the most recent MLS Team of the Week.
Wagner has started in 16 games this season and has played a crucial role in helping Philadelphia get to the CONCACAF Champions League semi-final. Having had eight assists last season, the 24-year-old is looking to match that tally in 2021, already having three to his name.
The left-back becomes the 10th Union player to make the All-Star Team and is the first player to do so since Andre Blake in 2019. Wagner is the first outfield player to make the team since Keegan Rosenberry in 2016.
The MLS All-Stars will face the Liga MX All-Stars, the first time it has ever occurred. The match will take place at the Banc of California Stadium on August 25th in Los Angeles.
