Joaquin Torres joined the Philadelphia Union on Thursday after the team finalised a trade with CF Montreal for the Argentinian midfielder.
The Union exchanged $500,000 in General Allocation Money ($250k in 2023 and $250k in 2024) for the midfielder, while $300,000 more in GAM could be available depending on whether Torres meets specific player performance conditions.
Torres, 25, will be added to the Union's roster after the team receives his International Transfer Certificate and P1 Visa. He will occupy an international roster spot.
As the Union look to become more expansive and flexible in the way that they play, Sporting Director Ernst Tanner spoke about the different qualities that Torres will bring to the team.
He said, “Joaquín offers a new dimension to our attack with his ball progression skills and aggressive, forward-moving mindset.
“He excels at creating opportunities as well as finishing, and his dynamic, proactive movements are exactly what we were looking to add to our attack.”
Torres initially joined CF Montreal on loan in 2021 before signing permanently from Newell's Old Boys in 2022. During his two-year stint with the Canadian side, the 25-year-old made 55 appearances and contributed seven goals and 12 assists.
